Journalism showcase at MK Dons FC

Students developed journalism skills via an interactive workshop with Fortitude Communications at Milton Keynes Dons Football Cub.

They were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of Stadium MK as part of the masterclass delivered in partnership with MK Dons Community Trust.

Pupils interested in pursuing a career in media were invited to learn more about the sector and gain experience via practical tasks delivered by Shaun Reynolds, as account manager at Fortitude.

Anna Gunn, Marketing and Careers Coordinator at The Cottesloe School, near Wing, Buckinghamshire, hailed the day as an incredible experience for our students.”

Interactive workshops

Shaun provided insights into what makes a good story, key interview techniques and how to write a match report to deadline.

Students then interviewed MK Dons Community Trust CEO Paul Mitchell as part of a mocked-up live press conference.

Fortitude also supported students in gaining some video production experience, with two students capturing the day for a video reel which was shared across social media.

The students were treated to a full stadium tour by Hannah Bladen, Head of Community Development at MK Dons Community Trust. It included the club’s media room, where press conferences and interviews take place, the dressing rooms and pitch side dugout area.

Inspiring the next generation

Shaun started his career as a journalist before developing a successful PR career at Fortitude.

He said: Journalism and PR present fantastic career opportunities for those who are interested in sport.

It can provide a front-row seat to memorable moments, help a person to champion their community and campaign for change. It’s something I’ve experienced first-hand and feel fortunate to have done so.

Showing this to students from The Cottesloe School was a real highlight, as proactively supporting the next generation of media professionals is something we are passionate about at Fortitude.

The group’s enthusiasm really stood out, and their ability to ask probing questions during our mock press conference, which was deliberately delivered as a surprise, so students had to think quickly on their feet.

Thank you to our colleagues at MK Dons Community Trust for providing the space and making the day extra special for students with a behind the scenes tour.”

Unforgettable experience

Anna Gunn, Marketing and Careers Coordinator at The Cottesloe School, said: The journalism workshop and tour was an incredible experience for our students.

A huge thank you to Shaun, Hannah and Paul for delivering an unforgettable morning, and a genuinely unique learning experience.

Providing students with a touchpoint to careers which interest them is a key priority for our team. And by partnering with MK Dons Community Trust, we are only strengthening the links our students can build during their education before deciding what steps to take after leaving school.”

The day was an extension of the Trust’s existing community work with The Cottesloe School.

Fortitude is the retained PR and Communications agency of MK Dons in the Community.
